Ialu scrunched his face as he watched the boy bring several containers up to his face to read the labels. He then mixed the two and handed it over to the egyptian. Ialu looked at the boy skeptically, but took the flask anyways and grabbed a pair of tongs and held it over the burner. A strange smell started to steam out of the top of the flask as smoke and he gagged, looking over other tables to see if their chemicals were reacting the same as theirs was. He turned to Keiani with a frown.
"Show me the two chemicals you mixed again?" he said trying not to breath too much of the foul smell. The other boy complied hesitantly and he read over the labels. The one supposedly labeled "sodium" was actually "sulfuric" and he growled. "That's sulfuric you idiot!" He quickly removed the flask from the burner and ran to the front of the classroom where the sink was and dumped the contents out. His teacher was eyeing him suspiciously.
Ialu stalked back to his seat and grabbed the chemicals from the Er Rit's hands. "Why don't you just read what we're supposed to do, and I'll measure?" he snapped, annoyed beyond all reason.

Kei's face burned red as he realized something had gone wrong. God damnit, figured. Couldn't even get past one experiment without having messed up what he read... Feeling a bit of dread he handed over the chemicals, feeling somewhere between embarrassed and vindictive -- sure he had misread, but did Ialu have to be such an ass about it? -- as the other confirmed that yes, Kei had managed to screw up already. Though that would explain why he hadn't been able to find the Na on the "sodium".
He didn't say a word as he grabbed the paper, using the time that the other boy had to spend re-mixing to carefully find the place the next experiment had started and read over the line. He had to put the paper so that it was only a few inches from his eye to do so, but he just tried to ignore anything around him, hoping that anyone who might be watching him read would do the same. Or assume that his goggles were dirty and he was too stupid to clean them off. Something like that. He was fine with people thinking he was an idiot. Just so long as they didn't realize he was mostly blind... Granted with how things were going they were going to know he was at least very very nearsighted by the time class ended.
Line read he glanced up, realizing that the other was done mixing -- he had no idea for how long -- and also realizing that if Ialu had to do everything they were going to be here forever. There was no way he'd be able to hold the flask over the fire. Not being able to see it would make that nearly impossible, and he wouldn't know if something started to go wrong unless he smelled or heard it... Or the flask exploded. Which meant that he probably really should measure, which meant... Ah damnit.
"If you'll pass me the calcium and iodide I'll be able to mix it while you heat that one." He said, managing to keep his teeth from gritting as he did so. Damnit, maybe he should've just played like he was illiterate or something... To late for that now he supposed. At least he was positive he'd read the right ingredients this time.

Ialu considered this for a moment and looked through the labeled containers once again. "Here." He handed the boy two chemicals that he had asked for and turned his attention back to his own flask. He set it above the burner, and the chemicals started to bubble into a nice soft pink. After three minutes, he removed it from the flame and poured some into a petri dish from the chemical kit.
--
Finally class was over and he leaned his head back in exhaustion. They had managed to finish right before the bell, and without causing too much damage the rest of the way. He noticed that Keiani had to bring the paper very close up to his face to read while he waited for chemicals to mix over the burner and he squinted. That boy definitely had bad vision, but Ialu wouldn't say anything about it. Don't get in his way, and he won't get in mine.
The next class was language which went by relatively fast. All they had to do was read a few short stories and answer questions about it. And he could relax in this class since Keiani was seated across the classroom from him. He watched his roommate every so often as his tail swished about, and he thought about his own cat. A boy who had come through the classroom door tapped him on the shoulder and handed him a note. Ialu brushed the spot where the boy had touched him subconsciously and read the note. "After class please come to the office for a phone call to your mother." it read and he smiled genuinely
He glanced up at the clock in anticipation. Only five more minutes until lunch time when he could go call him mom.

Kei was somewhat caught between amazed and relieved that nothing else went wrong in lab... and if anyone had noticed that he was having trouble they were keeping it to himself. Better that they did so, he was dreading when someone actually asked about it and started up the whole battle of whether or not he could still do things for himself. Somehow people were less willing to let him deal when they knew he was essentially blind than when they thought he was just a clutz.
At least in the next class he didn't have to actually interact with anyone. He just laid one arm on the table, propping the book they were reading out of onto that and resting his head on the other arm so that, between the two, he was extremely close to the words. This way he could read, though he had to shift either his head or the book often to be able to keep seeing the words.
The class seemed to crawl by, his tail lashing in frustration as he read slowly through the stories. He could read well, he could read rather fast actually... but if he did so it would give him a headache, so he couldn't. Every moment that he drew out the actual reading was mentally painful to him, but at least it meant that his eye wasn't going to get overly fatigued before he managed to finish the assignment.
As it was he managed to get the paper turned in only just before the bell rang, having enough time to slip his book and pencil back into his bag and that was it. Kei didn't bother looking for Ialu... he really didn't want to. Maybe he could lose the boy... it didn't seem like his roommate was really all that interested in leading him about anyway, so hopefully that wouldn't be too hard.
As the bell rang, making him jump since he hadn't been able to see a clock, he wondered what was next, racking his memory before he realized with relief that it was lunch. He could do that. And when no Ialu came to attempt to lead him he was perfectly happy to slowly make his way through the crowds of students, backtracking towards the dorms so he could find the cafeteria again.
By the time he got there it was crowded, so instead of going towards the overly full line for normal food he looked about, managing to catch sight of a smaller -- much much smaller -- line at something he really couldn't see... But he could see a bit of green, so he headed towards it, a relieved smile breaking out over his face when he realized it was the salad bar. He grabbed a bowl, quickly getting through the short line and filling it around halfway up with veggies. He wasn't very hungry still, but he needed to eat...
Luckily he was able to find a seat that wasn't in a space surrounded by others. He could hear muted whispers from those closest to him as it was, though after about ten minutes of muttering and asking questions that nobody knew the answer too they seemed to lose interest in him. He pushed his bowl away, about half finished with his salad, enough that he could rest his head on the table. Today had been overly stressful so far, and he really just wanted it to be over already.

Ialu was the first out the door. He ran up a flight of stairs to the administration office to call his mom. He handed an plump woman the note and she nodded at him and reached down for the crystal ball and brought it up. "Please tell me the location, who you're contacting and the teller of the other line."
"South East Desrit, Amisi Re, and Penha is the teller." The woman nodded and chanted a few things bringing the ball to life. In a few moments he could see his mother's face and his heart raced. "Mom!"
"You have thirty minutes before the times up," the woman got up and left the room to give Ialu some privacy. He grinned down at the orb in front of him holding the image of his mother and she smiled back at him.
"How's my boy?" she asked, pushing her bangs out of her eyes.
"Miserable. Mom, I want to go home already. I hate it here," he said frustrated. He felt tired and out of place. He wanted to go back to the desert where he belonged.
"Come one baby, it's only until you graduate. Two more years won't kill you! We're all rooting for you here!" He lowered his gaze.
"Even that man?" His mother sighed and stared at him silently for a few moments.
"He knows what he did to you was wrong, and he feels horrible about it. Why don't you just forgive him?"
"No Mom! It doesn't work that way, okay? He jincing beat me to the point where I almost died! I can't believe you would even stick up for him! I can't even let someone touch my shoulder without me thinking back to it. God.. mom.. just nevermind, okay?" He leaned his forhead against the cool curve of the glass and sighed. "I'm sorry."
"I.. I got a new roommate. I don't like him," Ialu said shortly after with a scowl on his face. His mother laughed at her son's immaturity and he imagined her next to him, smoothing his hair down.
"Who knows? Maybe interesting things will happen," she smiled sweetly at him and he couldn't help but smile back.
"Maybe... anyways, when's the next time we'll be able to talk?"
"Well, we're running low on water again, So we'll be moving to Solea's high elf county for a little while." The egyptian boy frowned.
"Will you be safe there? You know that high elves discriminate against people like us."
"Of course we'll be fine! We're egyptians, remember? Okay, time's running out, so I'll talk to you when we get there. I love you sweety!"
"Love you too mom," he flushed and mumbled the words out, and she laughed heartily again before the connection ended, and white smoke clouded the crystal ball. He sighed and put the orb back where it belonged, and walked out of the office, feeling more alone than ever.

It didn't take long for the constant flow of voices to annoy Kei. Not long at all. After only a couple moments with his head down, he sighed, lifting it and dragging his bowl towards him and making a face at the suddenly less appetizing salad as he quickly ate the rest of it, carefully avoiding looking at anyone else as he grabbed up his bag again and started weaving slowly through the tables to exit the doors, stopping only to grab some fruit and tuck it into his bag for later.
Once out, he wasn't really sure where he wanted to go. He still had a good half hour left of lunchtime... and nothing to do. He could go back to the room and lie down... but then he might fall asleep. With how exhausted he already was just being in a silent closed off room was almost guaranteeing that would happen. Kei really wasn't in the mood for another book to be dropped onto his hip. One bruise was enough for one day, thank you very much.
For a moment he stood there, hovering in indecision, then someone opened the doors to outside, letting in a gust of air from the cool wind. That decided him. He never got to go outside as much as he'd like to, and actually being allowed to whenever he wanted... It was probably odd to come to school like this and end up with more freedom than home, he supposed. But they had always coddled him there, always been completely terrified that the next time he didn't see a step or a stick he'd go toppling to his death. So instead of letting him learn how to deal with it, their solution had been to eliminate the problem. Essentially keeping him stuck inside unless he could somehow sneak out.
Once outside he relaxed a little, purring slightly at the feel of the breeze through his fur and making way around to what looked like the start of an actual grassy outside area. He didn't actually go into it, instead finding by trial and error a bench settled just near it, though the bench was facing inwards towards the blurry expanse of gray and brown that was the school. He set down his bag, twisting as he sat down to rest his arms and head on the back of the bench and stare rather blankly out, away from the school and people.

Ialu reached the cafeteria where the lines were starting to deteriorate. There was only twenty minutes left to get his food and eat, even though he wasn't feeling hungry after a conversation with his mother. He stood behind a underclassman, crossed arms with a frown on his face. He felt someone push in front of him he stood there in shock before he started to fume. He tapped the upperclassman's shoulder and the guy turned around. He had a height advantage over the egyptian boy by a good foot, but Ialu didn't care.
"Hey buddy, you cut me!"
"So?"
"So, get behind me, and wait like everyone else!" The cafeteria was starting to go quiet and watch what was happening. He glared and clenched his jaw.
"Make me, little nyosik," the big upperclassman flicked Ialu in the forehead, which sent the boy into a warrior cry and a mighty punch to the senior's jaw.
Not long after that, Ialu was sent back to where he had come from, foodless and with a black eye. The dean sighed when he saw the boy walk in for the umpteenth time that month. "What is it this time, Mr. Re?"

Kei was half dozing off when he heard footsteps hurrying up behind him. He shook himself awake, turning to try to identify the blob.
"Hallo Keiani, I'm one of Miss Laney's assistants. We met this morning." The person said, reaching out to pet him on the head. When he only scowled at it, it continued, "Miss Laney needs to speak with you again so if you'll let me lead you there..."
"I don't want to talk to her." He snapped, pulling his head away from the hand and scowling at the person. Why the hell would they pat him on the head stupid humans, thinking he was like some sort of animal, "And I can find my way myself. I have a map."
The person started to say something then stopped, and said with a strained voice, "Well either way I have to take you there. You'll just be sent there from your next class so you might as well get it over with."
After a moment Kei jumped up scowl set on his face as he followed the person towards the building his had origionally met the dean and Miss Laney in. Why in the world did they need to see him again?
-----
Not long later he was sitting in front of the lady. Who was already more than a little disgruntled with his attitude. "We had this conversation this morning young man. You're essentially blind, going around by yourself you're going to end up getting hurt in the worse case, struggle more than you should have to in the best case. We're just trying to help you."
Kei glared at her. Figured, she was saying that with the door wide open, not even bothering to keep her voice down. "I'm not blind."
"Kei..."
"It's Keiani." He snapped, glaring harder at the blob.
"Keiani, you can see a little. You can't even see enough to read unless it's two inches from your face. Your language teacher said that you already were having trouble today, how are you going to manage without help?"
"If I have to I'll ask for extra time." He snapped, "I don't need to be led around by the damn hand!"
"Young man! Language!" She snapped, the blob moving. Kei waited for her to say something else, they had been going in this circle for quite a bit since he had come into her office today, but before she could someone else came in through the open door, crossing over and saying something to her about some adult there to see her.
"Oh lord. I'm sorry Kei, could you wait in the hall? If this takes too long I'll let you go to your next class, I'm afraid you'll be missing math today." She paused then added, "We will be having this discussion again even if you get to go."
Kei simply snarled at her, not really caring how rude it was, and leapt up, stalking out of the room and towards the cushioned chairs that lined the hallway.

Ialu looked up when he heard footsteps approaching him. A very pissed off looking Keiani was stalking down the hallway, and hadn't seemed to notice his presence. But then again he was pretty much blind.
"First day of school and you're in trouble already?" he asked the boy nonchalantly, leaning back in his chair. His plans on ditching he boy seemed to be not going well, and he was starting to second guess himself since he had gotten a chance to look at his mom and how proud she looked. He sighed inwardly to himself. He just didn't fit into this lifestyle. The uniforms, the people. It wasn't him at all.
His roommate looked liked he could fit in. He looked studious and like he had come from the city. He looked like he could actually afford it, unlike the egyptian boy's own mother who was scrapping up pennies just to save up enough money to send him here.

Kei paused as he heard his roommates voice. Good thing he already probably looked pissed off, or the displeasure at the sound would have been obvious on his face... as it was it just blended in with the rest of the anger.
Ears flicking in annoying he just growled at the question, grabbing at the arm of a nearby chair so that he could spin himself into it without missing. "I didn't get in trouble." He snapped, glaring in the general direction of the mash of colors that was Ialu. A moment later he paused, eyes flickering upwards and a brief vaguely malicious smile flashing across the anger, "At least, I wasn't when they brought me in here. Don't know about now."
Pulling his legs up, he rested his chin on his knees, letting his eyes wander more towards the center of the room and his ears slowly unglue themselves from their angry potion flat on his head, though they were still laid back. A bit of white drifted into his vision and he brushed it back angrily. Figured, now he was going to have to retie his hair, it was probably going everywhere if the ribbon wasn't holding all of it.
After a moment he flicked his ears again, twisting and reaching down to yank out one of the fruits he had grabbed earlier, coming up with what felt like an apple and biting into it angrily. Taking out his frustration through pointy teeth on what was proven to definitely be and apple. Probably better than doing anything else, even if he wasn't that hungry.

Ialu's eyes flickered over to the boys hand which was grabbing an apple out of his bag. Ialu nearly drooled because one, fruit was his favorite food in the world, and two, he hadn't eaten anything all day. His stomach growled angrily at him and he sighed and laid a hand on it in attempt to quiet it down. If he had ears, they would be flat against his head about now.
He stayed quiet, brooding like a sulky child who didn't get what they wanted, eyeing the food Keiani was munching down on. There was no way he was going to ask the Er Rit for food. Even if he did, he was sure that the boy would smash it into his face or so say no. He grumbled and crossed his arms, looking away from the boy next to him, down an empty corridor. Lunch would end soon, and he'd have to wait until dinnertime until he could eat something again, Ialu let out a frustrated noise.

Kei's ears twitched as he heard Ialu's stomach, but he steadily ignored the other boy, preferring to simply rip into the fruit and in one of those moods where really being mean was just about the thing to do right then. Hell, the other boy had woken him up by throwing a book at him, he deserved to be a bit hungry.
Really Kei had no idea why this person seemed to dislike him so much. Sure, he was a klutz, and he'd fully expected to be laughed at and generally have people being mean to him because of that, but that didn't seem to be the reason this time. But going into that whole realm was rather annoying, and Kei didn't feel like trying to figure it out. Most likely the other person was just a stuck up asshole and didn't want a roommate.
His ears twitched again as the boy made a noise, but this time he hesitated. Just because Ialu was mean didn't mean Kei should be... though the mood he was in was telling him that it seemed like a pretty good idea right now. Normally Kei tried to be nice to people in the I'm-being-nice-but-get-the-fuck-away-from-me type way even if he hated them. He tore another bite from his apple, then sighed, saying irritably, "If you want some you kinda have to ask."

"Ah... yea. Could I then...?" his words seemed to trail off and he turned back to the boy. He bit his lip, remember how rude he was to the boy earlier and he sighed. He was never like this before that.. thing happened. Then he just started to snap at people easier and distance himself from people right from the start so he wouldn't get hurt anymore.
"S-sorry about earlier... I shouldn't have dropped my book on you," he replied quietly, twiddling his fingers around.

Kei shrugged at the other boys awkward way of asking, reaching down into his bag and pulling out another fruit. The skin was smooth and it looked reddish, so he assumed it was another apple. He didn't bother saying anything as he held it out to the side, towards the other boy, instead taking a bite of his own apple.
The Er Rit was perfectly prepared to spend the rest of the time they were forced to spend together out here ignoring the other boy. After all, they'd be seeing far too much of each other while forced to share a dorm room anyway. He'd done his 'being nice' quota, that should have been that.
Except that then the other boy spoke again. Kei's ears twitched, drooping off to the side of his head as he remained silent for a bit, simply staring out in front of him instead of towards the other boy. He kept that up for a moment before he sighed, eyes flickering so that he could see the Ialu blob out of his good one as he said, rather forcedly, "It's alright, would've been worse for me to miss class than that anyway."
That was an understatement. If they were already onto him just because he was going slow, he probably wouldn't have been given a chance to argue had he actually missed classes.

Ialu smiled a toothy grin and reached out towards the apple with grabby hands, careful not to touch the other boy's skin. "Thanks!"
He bit into with a loud crunch, enjoying the sweet juices that flowed out of it. A lady stuck her head around the door, and looked down at her clipboard. "Mr. Ialu Re, Miss Laney will see you now." The egyptian boy took a few more quick bites of the apple, and threw the core away in a small trashcan nearby. "Your next class is history," he whispered to Keiani before standing up and strutting towards the office.
He took a seat in front of the vice principal's office with a plop, crossing one leg over his knee. "Mr. Re, according to Dean Winiban, you will be serving community service for this week. You will also be assisting your new roommate around the school. Please do not forget this utmost importance that you do not let him out of your sight. He has very poor vision, and his mother requested we watch over him carefully."
"Ch, why should I? He doesn't need my help," the boy turned his head away indignantly. "
"Why don't we make a deal then. We'll pay for your current semester and the next one, if you do this. That's half a year of no paying for you mother. Do we have a deal?"
Ialu gritted his teeth. Really, bringing financial matters into something like this. But.. his mother. He frowned and thought about it. His mom really wanted him to be here... and he wasn't ready to see that man yet.
"Fine," he spat. "We have a deal."

Kei was a little surprised at how... well the other boy sounded a lot happier at the apple. Maybe that had been a good thing to do after all, could be that the relative disaster of this first day wouldn't repeat in quite as bad a fashion... Or maybe it would be just a very very brief peace and he'd get another book dropped on him in the morning.
He was just settling into the silence when someone called Ialu... Called him to Miss Laney no less... Of course the world didn't revolve around him, it was probably something else. Hell, it better be something else. Last thing he wanted was them telling someone that he had to live with that he was essentially blind.
Before the thoughts could really root in his head, the other boy whispered to him, surprising Kei slightly that he'd actually told him... after all, Kei could have just dug out his schedule. For a moment he felt fairly sullen, thinking that maybe the other boy had noticed the trouble he'd had with reading and not really wanting to start down that slope of people helping him. Sure, this amount was fine, but they always seemed to deteriorate into leading him about by the hand.
Shaking his head, he dismissed that from his mind as the other boy disappeared into the office. That was doubtful, considering this boy. Most likely Ialu hadn't been paying the least bit of attention to his unwanted roommate in class, so how would he know other than Kei had a bit of trouble reading things far away? More likely he had come to the same conclusion on the whole extending peace thing that Kei had. It would be better this way.
Swinging on his backpack, he dug out the map, taking a moment to figure out where he was going to before heading to his class.
-----------------
Later in the day -- classes finally over -- Kei got back to their room. He was utterly exhuasted. There were some things he needed to read that he hadn't finished in history (honestly, why was the damn print so small?)... but his eyes hurt and he didn't want to deal with it right then.
Instead he crawled up onto his bed, taking the time to shed his shoes, but not even bothering to take off his glasses as he curled up rather catlike around his pillow, half dozing. Homework could wait for an hour or so.

Ialu ended up missing half of his history class from sitting in the office going over plans to keep an eye on Keiani. He wasn't listening to most of it, but what he did selectively hear sounded like she wanted Ialu to keep his roommate in a tight leash and to treat him like some jincing deaf, blind and dumb kitten. He scoffed after leaving the room, feeling a huge headache coming. And his stomach was still totally unhappy with him, growling non-stop.
Math didn't sound so appeasing to him, especially on an empty stomach and half a tank of gas, so he skipped out and laid down on the lawn underneath his usual tree for a quick nap. He really didn't feel like facing the wrath of the Er Rit, but he remembered he had to take care of Seb. He groaned as he rolled up into a sitting position and pushed himself off the ground.
--
Ialu reached the room, one hand holding Seb, bouncing him up and down. He noticed a sleeping Keiani and he couldn't help but smile when one of his white ears flicked.

Kei came awake, at first thinking it was rather random... or maybe because of the way his glasses were digging into his nose. He really needed to start remembering to take those darn things off when he was 'just dozing'; it always turned into full on sleep.
One of his ears twitched as he heard a footstep, and he came more awake, realizing that what had woken him up was probably the door opening... At least it wasn't a book this time. The Er Rit yawned, stretching his arms out a bit and turning over so that he could look towards where the human was out of his good eye... though it being still blurry from sleep put him back to more or less blind even with the glasses still on. After a moment he took them off, holding them folded in one hand and yawning as he rubbed at his eyes with the other, "Hallo."
For a moment he stayed where he was, then he stretched, sitting up and crossing his legs as he tried to shake himself awake, "What time is it?"
He'd probably slept longer than he'd meant to... which meant that he was going to have to start reading the rest of that history fairly quickly. Figured.

Ialu glanced back at the clock on the wall above his bed, fingers scratching under Seb's chin. "It's almost 5:30. Dinner's at 7 so we should go down there together." He let Seb down on the floor and rustled through a pile of dirty clothes next to his bed to try and find one of the cat's toys. Finally finding a jingly ball, he rolled it to the feline's feet. Seb took a predatory stance, tail swishing as he waited to attack. He pounced at the ball, making it jingle and Ialu laughed, laying on the floor and watching his cat play.
Ialu changed out of his uniform, feeling much better back in his native clothes. He felt uneasy at how quiet the room had gone and he cleared his throa.t "What do you think about working being stage for a play? It'll be extra credit..."

Kei didn't answer the offer of dinner, not really feeling all that hungry... and he had fruit in his bag still, which he couldn't let go to waste. So instead of answering he just rubbed at his eyes again, iritably tugging the purple ribbon from his hair as he realized that it was a complete mess by this point. He was going to have to retie it now...
His ears twitched as he heard something jingle, though he didn't bother trying to look for whatever it was. Instead he just stayed on his bed, a grin flickering over his face very briefly at the sound of the other's laughter.
By that point he was a little more awake and slipped his glasses on, mind automatically running back through what all had happened since he woke up (a habit he had gotten into after forgetting things he had said while sleep), and he froze, frowning as he recalled the other boy's wording that they should go down together... And his mind put that in with Miss Laney having asked to see him... Why would the boy be acting nice now, even despite the apple...
Blinking a little the albino dismissed it from his head, reminding himself that, contrary to how he often seemed to act his problem wasn't the center of the world. Maybe the other boy was just trying to be nice. Hell, maybe Miss Laney had called him in there to order him to be nice, it wouldn't be past her, and that didn't necessarily mean that she had divulged to Ialu just how bad the boy's sight was.
If anything the next comment just convinced him more that Ialu really hadn't been told anything or been asked to lead him around. Anyone who actually knew about him probably wouldn't have suggested something that required sight. Of course, that was just about the only reason that the boy didn't vhemently deny any want to do something like that, instead saying, "Well... I've never been anywhere near that sort of thing... Are you a part of a play here or something?"
