Lately, the days in Lumiina had become cool with cold and warm fronts hitting it. Ialu sprawled his long limbs across the tall grass on the Academy's campus grounds. He unbuttoned the uncomfortable school uniform and scowled. He didn't know how these stupid city people wore such suffocating clothes all the time.
He sighed, feeling nostalgic. He missed his home. He missed the sand and the heat, the cold nights, and the traveling. He felt miserable here all the time and he didn't see why his mom thought it was so great. All the kids here were strange and they were too touchy with him. He had already gotten in trouble multiple times for punching his classmates.
Plus, when he got back home, he would be the weakest boy there. At this age, the boys in his tribe were training, and he was stuck with books and exams. He was also supposed to be getting a roommate today, even though he had begged the administration to let him keep a room by himself. He grimaced when he thought about another boy having to share a room with him.
"I wanna go home...," he thought miserably.

Keiani quickly followed the person who was leading him towards what he assumed would be his room, a scowl set on his pale face and ears twitching in annoyance. He hadn't even been here an hour and already he had gotten into trouble... but it was the lady's own damn fault for grabbing his hand and trying to lead him around like a child. He didn't need that! He didn't! She deserved to be snapped at for it, at the very least.
Needless to say, the person he was currently following was a different person, who had completely ignored the boy's annoyed complaints at having to actually share a room with someone... Well hopefully they didn't mind cat hair. The Er Rit's fur was fairly long, and white tended to show up fairly well on things to normal people, from what he was told.
The walk seemed to take forever, Kei focusing on the blurry back of the person striding in front of him with most of his things, the smaller cat boy trying to keep up with another bag so that the person didn't become one with the mass in front of him. That the windows were on the side of his blind eye wasn't helping matters at all... He was going to have to find some way to figure out which door was his. They all looked far too much the same... For a moment he was worried, nearly managing to lose sight of the person leading him as he paused in something akin to panic, then he tossed it off. He'd always managed to deal with this before, he could do this on his own.
The white furred boy was completely out of breath by the time they got to his room... what he assumed as his room. The man unlocked it, entering in and setting Kei's bags on what he assumed was his side of the room... the other side looked occupied, at least, so it must be.
"Here's your class schedule." The man said gruffly, waving a white sheet of paper before setting it on the white sheets, where it promptly disappeared into a blur in Kei's eyesight, "You should have lots of classes with your roommate, so follow him if you have to. Otherwise as soon as you're ready to apologize to Miss Laney she'll be happy to help." The boy didn't answer, merely glaring at him until the man left, the door closing firmly behind him.
Kei sighed heavily, running a hand back through his pale hair and closing his eyes. Today had been tiring. He supposed that he really should start unpacking and putting everything in places before whoever his roommate was returned... but he didn't want to. Instead he crawled up onto the bed, managing to catch sight of the dark shadow of the paper on the comforter and setting it onto the wood floor, where it would be more visible for when he needed it later. Sighing again, he slipped off his glasses, letting the world disappear into a completely unrecognizable blur before he laid back, glasses still clutched in his hand and closed his eyes.
Putting things away and reading the sheet could wait until his headache was gone.

"Naptime is it, hmm Mr. Re?" Ialu jumped in surprise at the voice bellowing above him. He opened his eyes to find an unpleased looking Professor Crome, his forehead wrinkled and crooked nose lifted slightly in a sneer.
"Yea, yea. I'm up, I'm up!" The boy stood up and brushed his pants free from the leaves that had fallen on him since he had fallen asleep.
"You had me in a hunt Mr. Re. Your roommate has arrived. I expect your presence in your room, right now." The Egyptian human scowled, and rolled his eyes, waving a dismissive hand towards the authority. He walked downhill to where the campus dormitories were, leaving Professor Crome behind. He entered the building, stopping by to the cages to pick up Seb who had been waiting for him all day. The kitty meowed in delight when he saw his owner approaching, his tail swishing happily. Ialu smiled, and opened the cage, picking up the cat gingerly and nuzzled his neck with his face.
"Sorry Seb! I haven't seen you all day have I?"
He strolled to his room and swung the door open. There was a box of unfamiliar things in a corner and the second bed by the window was occupied by his sleeping roommate. He narrowed his eyes at the body, not feeling happy at all. It just wasn't fair. He had gone by two years with no roommate, and now he was forced to put up with annoying, disgusting person. He set Seb down on his bed, tapping him lightly on the nose. "No sniffing around the new roommate, okay?"
He stripped himself free from his uniform jacket, feeling much better and stretched his arms above his head before plopping down tiredly on his bed.

Keiani's ear twitched as he heard the door swing open, but he kept his eyes stubbornly closed, intent on ignoring whoever this person was. Maybe he'd be able to get through this whole time just completely ignoring the other person... wouldn't that be nice?
He was halfway expecting the person to say or do something... Okay, so he was mostly expecting it, though he was hopeful that whoever this was thought he was asleep. When the other boy didn't immediately say anything he relaxed a little bit, figuring that he had at least a little bit more peace and quiet until he was forced to 'wake up' and start unpacking. Really life would be so much more fun if he could just ignore everything and just stay like this all the time... but of course he couldn't do that.
And of course his resolve to ignore the roommate was broken as he heard the person talking. He was unable to keep his nose from crinkling in confusion, ears twitching as he thought... Sniffing? Did that mean...? Did he have some sort of pet here? Oh gods hopefully it wasn't a dog. Kei hated dogs. Stupid messy things.
Tensing, he turned his head a little and let his eyes flicker open, though with his glasses were still clutched in his hand, his golden eye being the one that was looking more or less towards the other boy did nothing to actually enable him to see the person. Just lots of shadows in the light, a blob that was probably a person...
"You have a pet." He said after a moment, frowning slightly, one of his white ears twitching. He didn't phrase it as a question... but it was still curiosity that was killing the cat... or the cat's want to not speak at least, damnit. Hopefully the person would actually mention what the pet was so he wouldn't have to ask.

Ialu turned his head to face his roommate who had just spoken. He was a beastman, which was rare to see in the academy. His hair was unruly and he had ears perched on top of his head. "Seb, come here." His cat turned his attention to his owner who just called him. He paused, tail moving slowly. He looked at the strange new person one last time before bounding towards his master. Ialu picked up Seb and placed him by his side, petting him lightly.
"Yea, I have a pet. You two should get along though," he replied with a huff, turning his head back. He stared at the ceiling, feeling odd to have someone only a few feet away from him. Ialu played with a bead at the end of one of his braid, twisting it in it's place. He could feel a cold vibe from the boy across from him and he growled lightly. "Listen, you don't get in my way, I don't get in yours. Got it?"

Well, the person hadn't actually answered Kei's silent question of what the pet was... but at least if the person assumed they would get along it wasn't a dog. Not unless the person was really really stupid or something. Hopefully it was a cat, he could deal with other cats... And if whoever this was had been able to identify Kei as a feline then it almost definitely was a cat.
Mentally shaking himself out of his thoughts, he pushed himself up so he could sit cross-legged, more or less facing the direction he thought the other boy was in and gently setting his glasses down on his lap so that he could run his hands through his hair. That was the only problem about lying down. Lying down caused knots and general messiness.
"Sounds perfectly find to me." He said back, eyes flickering over the blob that he assumed was speaking. He didn't bother answered the growl, and the only trace of annoyance he showed was the flicking of his ears and tail. Really, if the person just wanted them to keep out of each others ways that would be best... though possibly somewhat difficult considering from what he had been told they had to share a desk and bookshelf...
The cat's eyes flickered to the boxes of his things that were stacked at the end of the bed, their tops having been painted various bright colors by his mother in code to what was in them so that Kei would be able to see them easier. Maybe he would just leave his things in there, except for clothes, but it was probably better to have them where he could decipher what was what than unpack them and risk confusing himself. Or risk grabbing something of the other boys, somehow he doubted that would go over well.
After a moment he shook his head, slipping on his glasses and glancing over towards the other boy with a vaguely skeptical look on his face, mostly wanting to see if the glasses would help him more... they did a tiny bit. Now it was a person shaped blob instead of just a blob.

Ialu rolled into a sitting position, his expression in a fixed scowl. He wasn't happy at all. He stood up, wanting to get out of his uniform. He removed his undershirt, nearly ripping all the buttons off, too impatient to unbutton them one at a time. He then removed his trouser pants, standing in nothing but his undershorts, his slender and toned body showing. Ialu carried literally no fat on him, despite that he ate like a vacuum cleaner. He opened his small dresser at the foot of his bed, taking out his baggy shorts and slipping them on, snapping the waistband.
He glanced quickly at the clock, seeing that it was almost seven, he spoke roughly. "It's time for dinner." He left without another word, feeling his stomach growl. He was going to get demerits for not wearing his uniform, but it didn't matter. He wanted to be served first since today was an exceptionally tasty one. He licked his lips, thinking about warm bread and butter, mashed potatoes and giant pieces of steak. He smiled, half skipping to the cafeteria.
When he reached the doors, only a few students were starting to file in and he grinned, running to the trays and standing in line. The other students eyed him and whispered about how strange he was. He had built up an infamous reputation for starting fights in class if someone looked at him the wrong way.

Kei tilted his head as the person moved, ears twitching as he tried to identify what the sounds were. Belatedly he realized that the person was getting dressed, helped by the changing colors, and he looked away. He had forgotten about the whole having to change in front of another person thing... though apparently this other boy was used to it. Worked out well for him, Kei couldn't see him.
His head snapped back towards the door at the other boy's sudden departure, his mouth opening as if to say something before he shut it again, staring in consternation at the closed door. Well that was sudden.
Belatedly he realized that he didn't know where the cafeteria was... but they had given him a map. He reached over, digging it out and bringing it close to his face so that he could read it.
A moment later he was going down the same path that the other boy had taken... albeit quite a bit slower. At least he was at the end of a hall so the he didn't have to count doors, it was only just occurring to him that that had probably been deliberate on the part of the school. One less thing to have to lead him around to.
By the time he reached the doors and slipped inside, there were a few more people, though still, not as many as had been there before. Still, the albino paused just off of the doorway, staring at all of the people with wide eyes. Sure, there weren't many there in relation to what he had been told there could be, but to him it was still a lot! Attempting to stay as inconspicuous as possible, he edged his way towards where the people-shapes were heading. Since it looked like it had food that was probably the right place to go... He did his best not to make eye contact with anyone, hoping that no one would notice when he fumbled everything, as he was bound to do as soon as he got to the food. At least once he figured out where things were he would be unlikely to actually spill anything...
((Adding more for plotting purposes XDD))
When he managed to actually get through the line, simply grabbing a piece of bread and a small amount of potatoes, he was rather amazed. Kei edged out of the way, eyes flickering about as he tried to figure out where other people weren't heading towards, and finally spotting a point in the blur that seemed to be an empty part of the table.
That no one bothered him -- he had origionally gotten the impression that the school was primarily for humans, and the white hair was rather distinctive -- he was both relieved and surprised... though from what little bits of conversation he managed to catch it seemed that it was more that they had some other form of entertainment. Who it was he had no idea, since all he could catch were bits of descriptives about whoever this person was... not exactly something that Kei could go off of.
By the time he got back to the dorm, he was more than ready to get to bed... Well he probably should shower too, but that could wait, it wasn't like he had gotten dirty today. Instead he simply stripped off his uniform, pulling on a thin pair of shorts and crawling into his bed, carefully setting the glasses on the dresser before he drifted off to a nightmare filled sleep.

Ialu patted his full belly happily as he strolled down the corridor to his room. He had managed to get three helping this time before the faculty caught him and kicked him out. He opened the door and all the lights were out. Seb was already asleep on his bed and he smiled, moving the feline over so he could put his head on the pillow. He was surprised to see a lump in front of him, forgetting that he had just received the newcomer and he sighed before struggling to fall asleep.
The next morning came too soon, and the egyptian rubbed his eyes grumpily as light poured in from the window. He stretched, patted Seb on the head and leapt out of bed. He grabbed his uniform and a towel and headed off to the community bathrooms for a quick shower before anyone got there.
He returned to the room half an hour later, finding his roommate still asleep. He frowned and looked around the room for the heaviest thing he could find that would permanentally maim him. He settled for his history book and promptly walked over to the sleeping boy and dropped it on the side of his waist. "WAKE UP."

Kei had been in the midst of... well, a definitely no so happy dream, when something suddenly slammed into his side and yelled at him. Instantly he shot out of under his covers, hissing violently at his attacker with his ears flat on his head and the long fur of his tail a poof. Unluckily for him -- or maybe luckily since it shook him out of the half dream state he had been in and back into reality -- he hit the wall as he spun to snarl at the attacker, his head bouncing back to slam against it as he did so. Figured, as if he didn't have enough problems with his vision, now he was going to have a headache all day too.
He growled at the other boy, a low sound, barely audible but still there, and glared at him. Utterly pissed. "What the hell was that for?" He snarled, any actual intimidation he might have had hope of inspiring (which really probably wasn't much in the first place) spoiled by the fact that he was half naked. Maybe the whole ghostlike quality his skin got when he was surprised would at least throw the other boy for a loop... though Kei wasn't holding out for that.
He closed his eyes for a moment, grimacing as he reached up a hand and rubbed it where his head had impacted the wall. Great start to the day so far. Really really wonderful. He hadn't even been up a minute yet and he just wanted to lay back down and ignore the world, usually it took at least until lunch time for him to get that fed up. And now his hip hurt too... damn that was going to bruise.
After a moment he dropped down so he was sitting cross legged on the bed, pulling his emotions together so that he could manage to tone the glare into a simply venomous look and snap out, "That was uncalled for."

Ialu sneered at the squinting boy below him. "We have class in thirty minutes. Breakfast starts in ten minutes."
He turned around back to his own bed, and collected his book bag, stuffing his textbooks into it roughly it. He swung his bag around his shoulder and picked up a grouchy Seb from off his pillow. "I'll be in the cafeteria." The temperamental boy stalked out of the room before letting his roommate reply once again. He was stopped, however by a very angry looking Professor Crome.
"Mr. Re, You will be escorting your roommate around for the entire day. We have set up his schedule so you have most all classes with you. Please make this workout, or you will be suspended without notice."
A bright light shined in his eyes. If he messed this whole thing up completely, he would be able to go home even for just a little! "Roger that, Professor," he smiled sweetly, eyes gleaming. He placed Seb into his cage before bounding back to his room. The boy was still sitting on his bed, and he growled. He was going to miss breakfast at this point!
He tossed the Er Rit an extra uniform. "Put this on, quick. We're gonna miss breakfast!"

Kei didn't bother answering, though it was tempting to snap that he wasn't hungry anyways... Though he supposed it was a good thing that the other had woken him up. Even if there were many far better ways to have done so. If Kei had been late for his first classes then they probably would have assumed he had gotten lost for not being able to read the doors, not that he had slept in.
He had a feeling he wasn't going to be eating much breakfast at this place, no if this was the time of day they were making him wake up. The sun coming in the window was of no consequence to him. He could barely see it anyways.
Slipping on his glasses, he groggily started getting out of his bed, freezing and dropping back down onto it as he heard an adults voice outside the door. Mentally he was snarling. He had told them he didn't want to be led about. He had told them, his mother had warned them, his tutors had advised them not to do it, and they had still decided to find some way to have him babysat! Maybe he'd be able to slip away, or during one of those separate classes (if they even had separate classes) avoid meeting back up with the other boy. Gods this was annoying.
"I don't need to be led about." He snarled, pulling on the uniform anyways; at least getting dressed was something he could do easily by feel. "And I'm not hungry. Just go to breakfast without me. I'm not near ready to leave."
Hopefully that would get the other boy out of the room for long enough that Kei could figure out which of his books were which and find everything else. And brush his hair and tail. Gods did he need to do that.

"Fine," Ialu spat out, feeling pissed off. He strutted out of the room and closed the door with a loud bang, lips pursed. He arrived at the cafeteria, finding that the line was long just because he had to go back and tell his jincing neighbor to get dressed. He growled under his breathe and pushed some scrawnier kids out of his way, cutting them.
One of them started to protest, but he turned to face them, giving them a moody glare. The kid shut up, feeling frightened and he turned to glance at his friend. Finally, after a grueling five minute wait, he picked up his tray and loaded it with scrambled eggs, bacon and other various fattening foods. He scarfed down his food angrily, gulping down his glass of orange juice. The whole cafeteria had all eyes on him, once again. The egyptian stood up promptly and dumped his scraps into a trashcan before dropping off the tray on a conveyor belt.
He reached the door once again, and leaned against the door frame, waiting for his stupid roommate to hurry up. "First class is science."

Kei breathed a sigh of relief as the door slammed shut, rubbing his hip as he climbed back out of bed. He had a feeling that the year was not going to be fun.
It took him a moment to remember where he had put his schedule, before he reached down, glad it hadn't disappeared somehow the night before. Maybe the floor really hadn't been the best place for it... but whatever. He still had it, and that was good. Paper in hand he bounded over to his boxes, pulling open the top of the one painted blue, which should have his school supplies in it. Sure enough as he stuck his hand in he encountered cloth, books, and bundles of sticks bound together. Pulling the messanger bag out of the box, he brought the list up close to his "good" eye, before beginning the slow and painful process of doing the same thing with every book until he had the ones that he needed.
They hadn't given him a materials list when they had given him his schedule, so he just packed the pencils, books, and paper away into the bag, carefully memorizing the order that he put the books in so that he wouldn't have to undergo the same confusion -- or the embarrassment of making his disability obvious -- in the classroom under the scrutiny of other students.
That taken care of he pulled on his shoes, lacing them up tightly before rummaging around in the bag he had carried himself and coming out rather triumphantly with a hairbrush and a ribbon, though in the shadows by his bed he couldn't tell for sure what color it was, looked like purple, didn't really matter he supposed. For a few minutes he wrestled with his long hair, brush tugging at the knots that had accumulated over the night to try and get the straight mass of white to go back to how it was supposed to be before tieing it all back into a ponytail with the ribbon. He didn't do a bow, even he knew that was girly, but the ribbon would keep it out of his face.
By the time his roommate returned he was working on brushing out the long fur of his tail, with a different brush than the one he had used for his hair, since fur was different than hair was. He flicked his ears at the other boy, calmly finishing the last few strokes on his fur before letting his tail go and standing up. Kei flashed an empty smile at the other boy, picking up his bookbag with one hand and tucking the map into the top of it as he answered, "I'm aware of that. I do have a schedule."
At least now he was calmer. Things always tended to be better if he didn't get pissed off... or at least didn't let anyone see that he was angry.

"Whatever." Ialu turned to face the hallway, fixing the strap of his book bag, he looked over his shoulder. "Let's go," he gave an un-enthused grimace. He stepped forward in long strides from being so lanky and he looked back to see how far the boy was from him. He growled under his breath and stopped, hands on hips. "Come on! We're going to be late!"
A brown spikey haired boy passed by Ialu, slowing down with a large smile on his face. The boy was an underclassman compared to Ialu, so he gave the egyptian boy a light bow. "Good morning!" he grinned cheerfully, his arms full of boxes.
"Jeremiah, I told you not to talk to me at the academy," he said wearily.
"Oh, I know. I just wanted to say good morning! I'm off to the Student Council room then..," his smile faltered and he exited the doors. They had been childhood friends before the incident with his uncle had happened. Ialu winced at the memory and shook his head. Why are thinking of that again?
Finally his roommate had caught up to him and he opened the door, not bothering to hold it open for the Er Rit behind him. He heard a smack and he frowned, opening the door to see what had happened. The boy was sitting on the floor with a red nose.
"Are you blind or something?! Jeez!"

Kei growled under his breath as he tried to follow the other boy, hands wrapped around the strap as he concentrated on keeping his eyes on his roommate. Damn, why did the boy have to walk so fast? Kei was definitely going faster than he was used to doing and still wasn't catching up --
He sighed in relief as the other by stopped, managing to get closer. Close enough that when another shape stopped by the one he was following he could hear their conversation; cat ears were good like that. Though in listening it occurred to him that this strange boy alienated everyone... It had to be on purpose, though he couldn't imagine why. Even Kei didn't automatically try to alienate people, just tried to get them to leave him alone and treat him as invisible. Someone who didn't want to be seen wouldn't act like this boy did, would they?
Or maybe he just liked being an asshole. That was probably a more likely answer, far as Kei could hear.
One would think, having had that thought, that as the other boy went through the door the Er Rit wouldn't have been stupid enough to assume that it would be left open for him... or that the door would swing closed slowly. He couldn't actually see where the door was, and was loath to reach a hand out all the way just in case it was closeing faster than he thought -- that would have made it pretty obvious to anyone watching that he at least couldn't see the door well. So it was fairly predictable, in hindsight, when the door slammed closed, his hand doing nothing to stop it from slamming into his face and knocking him back onto his hind.
"The blind wouldn't wear glasses, would they?" He snapped back, "I just didn't see how fast the door was closing." That was the truth at least, and hopefully something that wouldn't clue the other boy into how little Kei could see, though who knew how obvious the door's closing pathway was to those that could see clearly.
He was going to let the other walk more in front of him for now on though. Screw getting lost because the door closed before he reached it, if he broke his glasses he wouldn't be able to see a thing, and he didn't feel like having to be literally led around by the hand. He supposed he should just be counting himself as extremely lucky that hadn't happened this time.
Muttering unintelligibly to himself and rubbing his nose, he shoved past the other boy, walking a few steps past the door before a breath of wind brushed past his ears, startling him before he realized that they were outside now. He paused, eyes flickering closed at the feel of the air going through his fur for a moment before he glanced over to see where the oddly shaped blob that was his roommate was heading towards

Ialu finally reached the main building, his roommate tagging along behind him, struggling to keep up. The boy ran a hand down his face letting it trail to his neck where he kneaded lightly to get out a knot. He treaded up the staircase to the second floor where students were busy rushing to their classrooms. Halfway down the hallway, he turned right to a small class numbered "T-6". The egyptian boy took to sitting in the very back of the class near a couple of shelves. He put his feet up on the desk and leaned back in his plastic chair, waiting for the teacher to begin lecturing.
His roommate came into the classroom a few moments later and his teacher's face brightened and ushered the boy over. "Everyone, this is our new student, Keiani. Please treat him as you would others, and welcome him to Lumiina Academy! Mr. Keiani, why don't you take a seat next to Ialu in the back with his feet on the desk," the teacher gave Ialu a warning look to remove his feet and turned back to the blackboard.
Ialu grumbled when Keiani started for the empty seat next to him. This guy was really going to be with him everywhere. The egyptian boy let his head fall on the desk in frustration.
"Today class, We'll be working in pairs for lab work. So I need one person from each table to get up and grab some aprons, goggles, burners, and flasks."

Kei was vaguely relieved when he managed to reach the classroom without any other doors hitting him, though the relief was short lived as the teacher -- he assumed teacher at least -- came over, ushering him to the front of the class. He glanced out over the students, suddenly glad that the faceless blobs he was able to discern looked just the same watching him as they would have if they hadn't been. Made him a lot less self conscious.
He tensed for a moment, half expecting the teacher to mention him not being able to see to them... but once again it wasn't mentioned. He knew the teacher had been told, they had told all of them about that bit, but maybe they'd decided to at least meet him halfway... He could deal with halfway. Halfway didn't mean they were coddling him like they had origionally intended to.
With a glance about the back row, he found the blob that extended up over the table. Since that one was also lacking a blob person besides him, he assumed that was Ialu. The coloring looked like his roommate... same with the attitude... hopefully not. Kei had a feeling that this would be a whole bunch harder if that were the case.
As he moved nearer he still wasn't able to tell for sure if it was his roommate or not, but by that point the teacher was already speaking again, which at least spared him from attempting to be friendly just in case this was someone else.
And damnit they were doing lab work. God damnit. First day and it was probably already going to be obvious how much help he supposedly needed. There was no way he'd be able to manage to deal with fire and not burn the crap out of himself... "I have pretty bad depth perception, so I probably won't be able to do anything involving fire." He said, settling that as something that he could say and not have it scream that he would need help. He could pour things... So long as he had his face very close to the marking. Wouldn't be able to read a meniscus to save his life even with his eye right next to it, but he could get close enough by the graduations.
He glanced up, not yet having sat down and watching the flow of other students as he attempted to discern where they were going to get things... Long dark shapes over on the wall that were probably aprons, a big rectangular thing that was probably a set of drawers with goggles and flasks, and a streak of black that was probably a counter, maybe with burners on it. Without saying a word to his lab partner -- whom he still wasn't certain the identity of other than a name -- he moved to go gather things. That he could do, he'd just have to be careful. At least the table was in the back so it would be easy to remember which one it was.
And if he did things now, then hopefully this other person would do more in the lab so Kei didn't have to think up excuses for not doing so other than saying just how bad his eyesight was.

Ialu removed his feet from the desk and sat upright in his seat, waiting impatiently for Keiani to come back with the supplies. Sheets of instructions were passed around by the teacher and he glanced over it briefly before tossing it aside, completely bored. Science was definitely not his forte. School was not his forte. Traveling, hunting, fighting; what a real man should be doing.
Everyone was already seated and working by the time his lab partner came back with a handful of things. Ialu grabbed an apron and goggles from his hand, strapping on the goggles and securing the apron around his waist.
The teacher was coming around again to give everyone a set of chemicals and to check burners. "Today, we'll be studying three different ways to create a certain compound by mixing these chemicals together. Please read over instructions twice and begin." The egyptian started up the burner and handed the chemical set to the seated Keiani. "Mix 100 ml of liquid sodium with 50 ml of iodine and heat for three minutes," Ialu read to his lab partner. He looked over at the Er Rit, watching with a sullen expression.

Kei managed to avoid making a face as his lab partner spoke, confirming that it was his roommate. Great, just what he needed: a lab partner that already didn't like him. Before he answered he grabbed the other apron, tieing it on and moving his hair so that it wasn't caught in the strap around his neck. At least he had decided to put his hair back, that was one good thing, he pointed out to himself, as he carefully slid the goggles on over his glasses.
This was going to be rather interesting. He'd started learning chemistry before coming here, enough that he knew how to use the equipment... but he'd never actually done anything with it. Mostly because they weren't sure that he'd be able to successfully manage it, which had pissed him off to no end. Of course, it was those vestiges of anger at old doubt that made it so he wasn't going to just attempt to get Ialu to do most of the work. If he messed it up, he'd just fess up that he'd never actually been in a lab before. No reason to have to say that he was essentially blind anywhere past close to his face unless he did something that made it obvious.
He didn't bother to say anything in answer to the other boy, just setting things up and concentrating on attempting to figure out which chemicals were which. A quick glance around showed that measuring at least he'd be able to do, since multiple others were crouching down nearer to their flasks to get the measurement more precise. Maybe his would only be a precise as those of the people standing up... but at least he could do so without it being too obvious, as long as they didn't notice how he had to look at it from only one eye.
Finding the correct chemicals, however, was going to be harder. The iodide he managed to find by looking for the chemical that seemed to be the right color, just deciding to deal and leaning down towards to it, simultaneously holding the jar up closer to his face where he could at least see the I2 marking it... Sodium wasn't so easy, and took him a few tries to actually get it. Maybe it looked strange... But there wasn't any helping it and the alternative was explaining why it wasn't easy for him to read it. His eye hurt after having strained it... but at least he managed it.
Measuring was easier, though doubtless looked odd as the boy moved his head to look at the flask through his good eye. He was actually almost keeping pace with the other students when he finally handed over the flask to Ialu though. And he could always blame that on the whole 'haven't taken a lab before' thing... hopefully his odd way of having to read things had just gone unnoticed.
